A decade ago, SEO was simple. Design your site so it could be crawled by search engine spiders, repeat your keywords a few times, and you were done. There wasn’t much competition, and the Field of Dreams quote, “if you build it they will come,” was nearly correct. These days competition for terms worth competing for is extreme. Webmasters need to understand that if they want visitors they or their contractors need to be very good at SEO, social networking, or have a pile of cash to spend on PPC. Off-site SEO is primarily link building, which can be accomplished through a variety of methods including paid directories, article submissions, and press releases, relevant and useful reciprocal link exchanges, and social networking. The more engaged you are in the online community your site is a part of, the more likely you are to get natural links. While you do want links using your targeted keywords as anchor text, be careful not to overdue it. It doesn’t look natural to have every link pointing to a page use the same text, and a few “click here” or URL anchors will help you avoid an anchor text over-optimization filter.

The combination of keyword research, on-site SEO, and off-site SEO will get your site ranking, increase your traffic, and bring you money or fame. But realize you’ll need to go through this process continually. SEO is not a one time thing, and in order to keep up with the competition you’ll need to work hard at it.
